Trail Running Gear 2026: Ultra Distance Setup

Trail Running Gear 2026: The Lightweight Setup That Won’t Fail You at Mile 30

July 2026 — Trail running gear has gotten so light it’s almost scary. Shoes under 200g. Vests that weigh less than a full water bottle. But lightweight doesn’t mean fragile. Here’s what’s actually worth your money for long days in the mountains.

Shoes: Hoka Speedgoat 6 vs Salomon S/Lab Genesis

The Speedgoat 6 (272g, US 9) remains the benchmark for ultra-distance cushioning. Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5mm lugs handles everything from hardpack to loose scree. The midsole is softer than the Speedgoat 5 — some runners will miss the firmer feel on technical descents. Best for: 50K and beyond, runners who prioritize foot preservation over ground feel.

The Salomon S/Lab Genesis (238g) is the opposite philosophy: minimal, precise, fast. Energy Blade TPU plate provides snappy toe-off without the harshness of carbon. The Matryx upper is nearly indestructible — I’ve got 400 miles on a pair and the upper looks new. Best for: technical terrain, shorter ultras (50K and under), runners who want maximum trail feedback.

Vests: Naked Running Band vs Salomon Adv Skin 12

The Naked Running Band (85g, $55) carries two 500ml soft flasks, phone, and 4-6 gels around your waist. Zero bounce. Zero chafing. For runs under 3 hours, it’s all you need. The Salomon Adv Skin 12 (290g, $180) is the gold standard for anything longer: 12L capacity, trekking pole attachments, and a fit system that keeps everything stable through 100 miles of movement.

The Mandatory Extras

  • Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z poles: 280g/pair. Fold into three sections, stash in your vest. Use on climbs, stow on flats. Non-negotiable for anything with more than 3,000ft of vert.
  • Petzl Actik Core headlamp: 450 lumens, rechargeable, 75g. The USB-C rechargeable battery is a game changer. No more hunting for AAA batteries at 4am.
  • KT Tape Pro: Pre-tape your known problem areas before the race, not during. Knees, Achilles, and IT bands are the usual suspects.

What to Skip

GPS watches with 36-hour battery life sound great. In practice, your phone in airplane mode with Gaia GPS does the same job for free. Waterproof socks (Sealskinz, etc.) are a false promise — they keep water IN as effectively as they keep it OUT once you submerge past the cuff. Trail gaiters help with debris but add heat in summer. Save them for winter.
